Naltrexone is a class of drug known as an opioid antagonist, which suppresses the effects of opioids and other substances in the brain, diminishing the pleasure associated with their use.

When used as an addiction treatment, naltrexone has been shown to reduce the use of alcohol, illegal substances, and even prescription medications such as opioids.

Vivitrol® for Alcohol Addiction

Alcoholism is a dangerous and sometimes fatal disease affecting millions across the country. Most people drink alcohol recreationally in social situations. For some, however, alcohol becomes the primary focus of their lives, trumping their family, employment, and social commitments. This alcohol dependence, also known as alcoholism, is a condition that should be addressed with professional addiction treatment.

Vivitrol® that can help people quit drinking safely and successfully. Vivitrol ® works by interrupting the addictive pattern of alcohol by blocking the endorphins produced by alcohol from creating their usual reaction in the brain. Essentially, Vivitrol ® blocks the pleasure created by alcohol. When the pleasure decreases, the person’s drive to drink or misuse drugs declines.

Studies have shown that Vivitrol® reduces the number of days that recovering alcoholics drink heavily, as well as the risk that a patient will continue drinking during the treatment phase.
