What is Group Therapy?

A group therapy session involves one or more therapists working with several clients simultaneously.

The goal of group therapy is to ease distress by discussing and expressing feelings, promoting more constructive and adaptive coping methods, and changing unhelpful attitudes, behaviors, and habits. Some groups focus on educating members about specific issues or teaching them coping strategies.

Group Therapy: How does it work?

Therapy groups typically have 8-16 members, are led by 1-2 therapists, and meet regularly for 1-2 hours. Each member of the group and the group leaders sit so they can see the other members. Therapists provide structured conversation and guidance during the group session.

There are two types of groups: open and closed. An open group can be joined at any time, while a closed group has a set start and end date.

Frequently Asked Questions about Group Therapy Sessions in South Carolina
How effective is group therapy?
Group therapy has been found to be effective for various conditions, including addiction, PTSD, social anxiety, and even diseases as diverse as Parkinson’s disease. However, the effectiveness of group therapy is highly dependent on the individual, and how receptive they are to the techniques used in the therapy sessions.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
There are numerous studies detailing the benefits of group therapy for a variety of mental health issues. The benefits that are common to all group therapies are:

  • Gaining the confidence to speak openly about your difficulties
  • Getting to know people suffering from the same thing as you, so you don’t feel alone in your struggles
  • Group accountability
  • Sharing your journey with others
Can I be in individual and group therapy at the same time?
Yes. You may sign up for individual and group therapy sessions, as long as there are no scheduling conflicts. If you’re interested in doing both, please let us know so we can make sure we get you in. We will do our best to ensure you get the treatment you need.
Will I be forced to share my deepest, darkest secrets with the group?
Absolutely not! Our group therapy sessions aim to provide a safe environment to share only what you are comfortable with sharing. While we encourage patients to share, we don’t force anyone to share anything they don’t want to share.
What is the cost of group therapy sessions?
The cost of our group therapy sessions depends on several factors, including your individualized treatment plan. If you have insurance, group therapy may be completely covered by insurance. If you are a self-pay patient, group therapy will be included in your monthly self-pay fee. Give us a call for more specific information about our prices.
